Yemen’s army says 13 soldiers killed in fighting with Houthis in Taiz, Lahj

Thirteen Yemeni soldiers were killed in two days of clashes with Houthi forces in the southwestern provinces of Taiz and Lahj, the army said on Saturday, Anadolu reports.

The army-affiliated Tur al-Bahah Military Axis only reported the fatalities in a statement, without giving further details.

Several fronts across Yemen have seen renewed fighting in recent days between government forces and the Houthis, including Taiz, Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Bayda and Lahj.

The latest fighting is part of a wider military escalation that began in early July, the most intense since a relative calm prevailed across the country following an April 2022 truce.

Fighting accelerated further in September, with the Houthis seizing several key locations along Yemen’s Red Sea coastline.

Yemen has been locked in a civil war since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and several provinces in September 2014, before a Saudi-led coalition intervened in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.​​​​​​​
