Egypt destroys more tunnels between Sinai and Gaza

February 9, 2014 at 4:29 pm

In cooperation with Egypt’s Military Engineering Unit, Egyptian border forces have destroyed ten tunnels between the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip, according to Egyptian security sources.

In addition, a barracks and a farm were also damaged, the sources explained, because they were allegedly being used to hide materials that were intended to be smuggled into the Strip. The tunnels, the barracks and the farm were all destroyed completely.

Meanwhile, the sources claimed that they seized a pickup truck loaded with marijuana as it was passing the Suez Canal to the east.

Border forces also caught 109 illegal immigrants to the north of Al-Sallum crossing with Libya.

It is worth mentioning that the Israeli siege on Gaza, which was imposed in 2006, was tightened after Egypt closed the tunnels in the wake of the 3 July military coup last year.

Gaza residents had been using the tunnels to smuggle food, medicines, medical equipment, construction materials and many other essentials items that sustain their livelihoods.
