Khan Younis Municipality in the southern Gaza Strip has embarked on a massive sanitation project in cooperation with the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU). The project is funded by the ANERA International Foundation at an estimated cost of $800,000. According to the project engineer, Mohammed Abu Sha’r, around 50,000 people will benefit from the new sewage disposal network.

The installation of ground pipes up to 2,500 metres long will separate raw sewage from rainwater drains and is intended to end the problem of leaking cesspits. Work on the project began on Tuesday morning; when finished, it is expected to serve the residents of Sheikh Hamad City and Al-Israa’ district in the west of Khan Younis.
