Islamic Movement questions Jordanian election participation claims

February 17, 2014 at 1:50 am

The Islamic Movement in Jordan has cast doubts on the government claims that 56 per cent of registered voters took part in this week’s parliamentary election.

According to a press statement from the organisation, the real figure was less than 25 per cent and possibly even as low as 15.6 per cent. The movement is asking why the percentage figure leapt from 31 to 56 per cent in the hour or so before polling stations closed.

Monitors working on behalf of the movement claim that there were “hundreds” of violations during the electoral process, including people trying to buy votes openly. “This leads us to ask why nobody has denounced such open and public criminality,” said the statement.
