April 9, 2014 at 2:16 pm

The official Palestinian News and Information Agency (Wafa) announced on Sunday the death of the “poet of the Palestinian revolution”, Ibrahim Mohammed Saleh, who was known popularly as “Abu Arab”. The Wafa website said that Abu Arab was 83 years old and passed away in the Syrian city of Homs after a long illness.

Abu Arab composed homages to his homeland from exile for nearly 63 years. He was able to return to Palestine two years ago to participate in a cultural festival, where he performed in a series of concerts in cities around the occupied West Bank before returning to Syria.

Ibrahim Mohammed Saleh left his home in the Galilee village of Al-Shajara in historic Palestine as a refugee in 1948 when he was just 17, and settled in Homs with his family. He was one of 750,000 Palestinians who were driven from their homes by Jewish militias and their brutal actions which led to the creation of the state of Israel in the land of Palestine.

Abu Arab was known for his revolutionary and national songs that have been sung by Palestinians for decades. He is credited with composing around 300 songs and poems during his long career.
