Al-Ghannouchi tries to bring Libyan parties together for national dialogue

April 12, 2014 at 10:26 am

Sheikh Rashid Al-Ghannouchi, the head of the Islamic Tunisian movement Ennahda, revealed on Tuesday that he is currently overseeing mediation efforts between the Libyan parties that aim to resolve the country’s political and security impasse.

Interviewed by the Turkish news agency Anadolu, Al-Ghannouchi explained that: “There are initial contacts with the Libyan leaders in order to contribute to bringing them together for a national dialogue that leads to an agreement.”

Al-Ghannouchi added that his efforts are aimed at “bringing Libya back into the right transitional track, which should lead to a democratic success.”

Libya has experienced a deteriorating political and security situation, as well as an escalation of violence. The instability is made worse by the unregulated spread of weapons among Libyans that are outside of the authorities’ control.

Late on Tuesday, the Libyan General National Conference sacked Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zaidan and asked Defence Minister Abdullah Al-Tali to run a caretaker government for 15 days, when a new government will be announced.
