Israel launches new spy satellite Ofek 10

April 12, 2014 at 3:41 pm

Israel’s Defence Ministry launched its new spy satellite Ofek 10 into space late on Wednesday from the Palmachim airbase, located north of Ashdod. Many of the residents of central Israel saw the satellite heading toward space. It was seen in Gaza as well.

The spacecraft is expected to reach its orbit shortly at an altitude of 600 km, from which it will provide intelligence to the Israeli occupation forces on the ground. Its surveillance capabilities include photographing objects as small as one half meter.

The launch was carried out in cooperation with Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. Haaretz newspaper cited Ofer Doron, CEO of the company’s Space Division, as saying: “The satellite has exceptional photographic ability, but it is very small,” adding that “It’s designed to deliver very precise, high quality images under all conditions.”

Ofek 10 was manufactured by Israel Military Industries Ltd (IMI) and is the seventh Israeli satellite currently in orbit. It can operate in any weather.
