Anti-coup activists announced the launch of a new campaign entitled “The Boycott is Ongoing” with the aim of boycotting supporters of the new government, their products and TV channels, the Anadolu news agency reported.

A statement published by the campaign stressed the need to adopt “various means to oppose the current authorities during this important stage in the history of the revolution inspired by the wide boycott of the latest presidential elections. The campaign adopts boycott as a strong and influential means in the coming period.”

The statement pointed out that the “economic factor is very important to overthrow the coup and therefore the focus should be on striking an economic blow against businesses, firms and systems that support the coup, chiefly the United States, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia”.

It continued “economic boycott should be paralleled with a media boycott for all media outlets which supported the coup and a political boycott of all actions and decisions and unconstitutional institutions that resulted in the coup.”

A member of Al-Wassat Party Amr Adel said: “The boycott is the latest means to be taken by Morsi supporters against all entities in support of the coup. The boycott has achieved a significant impact on the street, in a short period.”

The new Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, was sworn in as president on Sunday, before members of the Constitutional Court’s General Assembly, the highest judicial authority in Egypt.

Al-Sisi won 96.91 per cent of the total votes where the turnout was 47.45 per cent.

Leaders of the Egyptian army and religious and political forces ousted former President Mohamed Morsi on July 3 last year, a move considered by his supporters as a military coup and by his opponents as popular revolution.
