September 16, 2014 at 9:56 am

Iraq’s Deputy President Nouri Al-Maliki said yesterday that the Islamic State (ISIS) represents a danger to the entire world and called to “arm the Iraqi army with modern weapons to strike terrorism”.

Al-Maliki made the remarks during his meeting with heads of tribes of Dhuluiya town and other Iraqi officials, including Parliament Speaker Saleem Al-Jubouri in Baghdad, the Anadolu news agency reported.

The Islamic State has imposed a siege on the town of Dhuluiya.

Al-Maliki said: “The Islamic State is a source of danger to the region and the world”, pointing out that Iraq has already received modern weapons, but he demanded his country be provided with other sophisticated arms.

He said: “We demand to have quality weapons to strike terrorism and we thank the international coalition for standing up against terrorism.” However he did not specify the type of weapons his country would like to receive.

Al-Maliki pointed out that “the Islamic State has hurt all the components of the Iraqi people including Shia, Sunnis and Christians.”

He saluted the people of the towns of Amirli and Dhuluiya for their resilience in the face of ISIS terrorism.

The Peace and Security in Iraq Conference which was held in Paris yesterday, with the participation of 29 countries, pledged to provide “appropriate military support” to Iraq to face ISIS.

The Iraqi army supported by the Peshmerga forces, backed by US air forces, waged attacks to restore the areas controlled by the radical organisation in the provinces north, east and west of Iraq.
