Iran to Arab leaders: America will stamp on you as it did to Saddam

October 2, 2014 at 4:13 pm

Iran has warned the leaders of Arab countries participating in the international coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) that they should learn lessons from the fate of the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and know that America “will stamp on them as it pleases”.

Tehran said it considers the aim of the US-led campaign against the organisation in Syria to be “the destruction of the country’s infrastructure”.

The Iranian news agency Fars reported the head of the Iranian Shura Council Ali Larijani as saying that the West “uses the case of striking the terrorist organisation ISIS as a pretext to destroy Syria’s infrastructure,” adding: “We see the involvement of the West in any wars occurring in the region… They have made so much hype about ISIS and targeting Syria’s infrastructure under the pretext of combat… This situation has become a pretext for the formation of an alliance for the destruction of Syrian infrastructure.”

Larijani asked why there was “noise from the West” in “fighting ISIS and terrorism” adding: “Some people in the region are pursuing Westerners, but they have to look at what happened to Saddam who wanted to become the champion of the Arabs, and that the Arab states who are putting their shoulders under the feet of America should know that America will stamp on them whenever it wants.”

The Secretary of the Supreme Council of National Security of Iran, Ali Shamkhani, criticised the US’ reaction to Iran’s support for the Lebanese army, saying that “it is a continuation of double standards and Washington’s lack of credibility within the fight against terrorism.”

Shamkhani criticised the Western countries’ involvement in the face of terrorism, saying that “there is no need for countries outside the region to address the threat of terrorism within the region”.
