Israeli Prime Minister sacks finance and justice ministers

December 2, 2014 at 7:08 pm

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday sacked his finance and justice ministers, writing an end to his coalition government.

Netanyahu directed Cabinet Secretary Avichai Mandelbit to issue a termination letter to Finance Minister and Yesh Atid Chairman Yair Lapid and Justice Minister and Hatnua Chairwoman Tzipi Livni, according to Yediot Aharonot newspaper.

The Israeli Premier cited “constant criticism” aimed at him and his government from both ministers.

“Lapid and Livni attacked the government I’m heading in the recent weeks, including the last day,” Netanyahu, leader of the Likud party, said in a statement.

“I will not tolerate with ministers who attack the policy of the government and its leader from within the government,” he added.

Netanyahu is expected to call for the dissolution of the Knesset (Parliament) as soon as possible, in order to prepare for early elections.

The Israeli government is made up of 22 ministers: two from Hatnuah Party, five from Yesh Atid, 12 from Netanyahu’s Likud party and three from Yisrael Beiteinu Party.

The coalition government has faced cracks in recent weeks over a host of issues, including the Jewish State law, which is backed by Netanyahu and opposed by Lapid and Livni.

Other points of disagreement include items with the state budget as well as Lapid’s refusal to impose taxes on apartments for young couples.

Israeli law allows the Prime Minister to dismiss members of his cabinet if they cause the government to grind to a halt.
