Senior official: Hamas has not changed position on Syria

January 27, 2015 at 1:09 pm

Osama Hamdan, Hamas’s foreign relations chief, said the movement’s position on the Syrian issue has not changed and that relations with Hezbollah will continue as long as they serve the resistance and the Palestinian cause.

During an interview with Al-Aqsa TV yesterday, Hamdan said: “Hamas does not build its relations with one party over another, but on the basis of supporting the resistance and the Palestinian cause. Therefore we are keen on maintaining relations with Saudi Arabia and with Hezbollah as long as they help us resist the Israeli occupation.”

Commenting on the Palestinian unity government, Hamdan said Hamas would give the government a chance to work but will not permit errors and abuses to continue.

“The unity government has not performed its duties since taking office, but we will give it an opportunity to review its policies,” he said adding: “It is no longer acceptable that an individual or group of people monopolise the Palestinian cause.”

The official pointed out that the government of premier Rami Hamdallah is a national unity government and not the government of Mahmoud Abbas.

Commenting on the ceasefire agreement with Israel, Hamdan said that Hamas asked Egypt to contact Israel to complete the negotiations held last summer, stressing on the need to open the crossings and to give people a chance to reconstruct the Gaza Strip.
