Ya’alon criticises US stance on Egypt

March 23, 2015 at 1:51 pm

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon has criticised the US administration for its stance on Egypt which, he claims, has “forced” the government in Cairo to source weapons from alternative suppliers. “Washington should recognise this and listen to Israel’s advice,” he told the BBC. Ya’alon added that the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt is stable.

“Israel and the United States share a very strategic relationship,” explained the minister, “especially in the field of defence, but this does not mean that there are no differences with the US administration, especially over its position on Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood as well as Hamas’s participation in a future Palestinian legislative elections and the chaos in Syria.” He pointed out that there are known communication channels with Washington and that such differences of opinion are well-known. “We often discuss them in public,” he insisted.

“Islamist militant terrorism in Sinai,” added Ya’alon, “grew as a result of economic and security negligence during the Mubarak era.”
