Major Sunni body warns of sectarian war in Iraq

The Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq (AMS) has warned of sectarian war in the country in the light of the continuous killing, kidnapping and deportations carried out by religious militias, Quds Press reported on Sunday.

In a press release, the AMS said that the ongoing assaults against scholars and prominent and well-educated people who are standing up to sectarianism in Iraq, is an attempt to facilitate the Shia expansion in the country.

Eyewitnesses, claims the AMS, are saying that the sectarian armed militias killed tribal chief Shaikh Abdul-Karim Al-Ghanim on Friday. The assassination of Sheikh Al-Ghanim was described as a serious crime by AMS, part of many major attempts to get rid of people facing up to the Iranian project in Iraq.

“This assassination, along with other similar assassinations, took place in the light of the Iranian expansion, which is sponsored by the government of [Haidar] Al-Abadi,” the AMS said. “The international community, mainly the US, is turning a blind eye to this.”
