Jordanian prince calls to protect Jerusalem

April 21, 2015 at 9:25 am

Jordan’s Prince El-Hassan Bin Talal, the uncle of Jordan’s King Abdullah II, yesterday called on the Arab, Muslim and international community to protect Jerusalem from Zionism and to support Jerusalemites, the Anadolu Agency reported.

The prince’s remarks came during a seminar organised by the Arab Thought Forum, Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation and the Royal Cultural Centre.

Prince El-Hassan said: “Jerusalem is not a bargaining chip between us and Israel” stressing that Jordan “made every effort to maintain the reconstruction of Jerusalem which carries historic value not only for Arabs and Muslims but for all mankind.”

“The risk to Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem require the formation of an Arab-Muslim umbrella to protect Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he said.

He called to “unify international efforts to protect Islamic and Christian history from Zionist aggression that showed during the recent Israeli elections more intentions to divide and dominate Jerusalem.”

The head of the Jerusalem Committee, Hisham Khatib said the next forum will “focus on mapping and documenting all Islamic and Christian Endowments in Jerusalem to protect them from future assaults”.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced during his election campaign in March that if elected, there would be no Palestinian state and that he will not withdraw or divide the city of Jerusalem.

Jordan is a “guardian” of Jerusalem according to an agreement signed between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan’s King Abdullah II in March last year.
