Brazilian Defence Minister Jaques Wagner on Wednesday said his country welcomes military cooperation with Iraq that includes providing logistical support and training to Iraqi forces in order to strengthen their capabilities in the war against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS.

The Brazilian minister’s remarks came during a meeting with Iraq’s Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, who arrived in Brazil as part of an official visit on Monday.

A statement issued by the Iraqi foreign ministry said Jaafari discussed with the Brazilian minister the security situation and developments of the war waged by Iraq, as well as international efforts to support it against ISIS.

Jaafari said during the meeting that: “Iraq is fighting a global war against terrorists who came from more than 62 countries to save and protect the region and the world from terrorism.” He stressed that his country looks forward for the Brazilian minister’s visit to Iraq, hoping it will result in agreements that serve the interests of both countries.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian minister pointed out that “Brazil has a long history of working in peace missions under the umbrella of the United Nations and other international organisations in various countries around the world.”

Iraq’s foreign minister also met with Brazilian government officials, including Vice President Michel Tamer.

Iraq aims to garner international support for its war against ISIS, which controls large areas in Iraq.

Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi said during a conference held on Tuesday in Paris with the foreign ministers of the international coalition against ISIS that his country needs more help in the war against the militants.
