Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi briefed his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika on the details of the latest Tunisian-American security agreement, an Algerian diplomatic source said yesterday.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Anadolu Agency: “On Tuesday, the Tunisian president’s special envoy Khemaies Jhinaoui handed the Algerian president a report on the nature of his country’s security relations with the United States under the security agreement signed between the two countries in Washington on 20 May.”

According to the source: “The security and military agreement between Washington and Tunisia which gave Tunisia key ally status will not affect the security and military agreements between Algeria and Tunisia.”

“The letter included detailed information on the items contained in the security agreement signed with the US since its security agreement with Algeria requires that any state should consult the other before making an alliance with a third party,” he explained.

Tunisia and the United States signed their security cooperation agreement on 20 May on the sidelines of Tunisian President Essebsi’s visit to Washington.
