An unidentified MiG-29 fighter jet trailed eight Turkish F-16 jets while they were on patrol near the Turkish-Syrian border on Monday, the Turkish military has said.

According to a statement issued by the Turkish General Staff on Tuesday, the MiG-29 jet kept the Turkish jets on radar lock for 4.5 minutes.

At the same time, Syrian-based missile systems trailed the Turkish jets for 4 minutes and 15 seconds.

The military said Monday an unidentified MiG-29 fighter jet had also trailed two Turkish F-16 jets for more than five minuteson Saturday.

Russia began flying combat missions over Syria on September 30 following an escalation in its military support for President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The US and its allies have complained of Russian airstrikes against “moderate” forces fighting Assad, despite claims by Moscow that it is targeting Daesh.
