October 13, 2015 at 11:52 am

Iraqi Defence Minister Khaled Al-Obeidi and a Russian military delegation held an official meeting in Baghdad yesterday, the first of its kind for joint security coordination purposes in the context of the quadrilateral coordination between Russia, Iraq, Iran and Syria.

The Iraqi defence minister’s office said in a statement that Al-Obeidi chaired an important meeting with a big Russian delegation led by the Director of the Federal Service for Military Alexander Fomin; the meeting was held to discuss military cooperation between Moscow and Baghdad, the statement noted.

Muwaffaq Al-Rubaie, a member of the Iraqi Parliament’s Security & Defence Committee, revealed that his government is considering the possibility of seeking Russian contributions to strikes against Daesh sites in Iraq in a way that does not conflict with the operations of the US-led international coalition.

The Iraqi Joint Forces Command announced last week the start of security and intelligence coordination between Syria, Iran, Iraq and Russia.
