Egypt received the most aid from the UAE between 1971 and 2014, official Emirati data revealed yesterday.

According to the data issued by the Ministry of International Cooperation and Development (Micad), Egypt received 47.26 billion dirhams ($12.87 billion) in aid during that period. Based on the data, Egypt spent the money on the development and humanitarian sectors.

Top 5 recipients of UAE aid:

  • Egypt: $12.87 billion
  • Syria: $3.36 billion
  • Morocco: $3.33 billion
  • Jordan: $3.12 billion
  • Palestine: $2.1 billion

Syria followed Egypt as the second top recipient of UAE assistance receiving 12.35 billion dirhams ($3.36 billion) followed by Morocco.

The data showed that the total sum paid for development, humanitarian and charity assistance by the UAE around the world over the 43 year period reached 173 billion dirhams ($47.5 billion).

The International Monetary Fund announced earlier this year that it expected the UAE would register the first general budget deficit since 2009 due to the reduction in oil income.
