Iraq: International action to protect Camp Liberty must be done in coordination with Baghdad

An Iraqi Parliament official said yesterday that any international action to protect Camp Liberty which hosts Iranian opponents must be done in coordination with the Iraqi government in Baghdad.

Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Member of Parliament Abdul Bari Zebari said: “Any international resolution to develop special security measures to protect Camp Liberty in Baghdad will not have an impact on the ground without prior coordination with the Iraqi government.”

Commenting on the European Parliament’s call to provide air protection for the camp, Zebari said: “The Iraqi government has taken security measures to protect the camp, but terrorism threatens all Iraqi cities without exception.”

He stressed that the Iraqi government is responsible for protecting the camp.

Camp Liberty hosts over 2,000 members of the Iranian opposition which advocate for a free and secular Iran, equality between men and women and the abolition of the death penalty.

On Monday, the European Parliament condemned the brutal attack on defenceless Iranian dissidents in Camp Liberty on 29 October and called for international protection for them.

The statement called for an UN-led investigation into the massacre.

“We cannot just stand and watch defenceless refugees being repeatedly targeted in this way and nobody is held responsible,” it said.
