Karen AbuZayd was the Commissioner-General for UNRWA from June 2005 to January 2010.

Before joining UNRWA, AbuZayd worked for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for 19 years. She began her humanitarian career in the Sudan in 1981, then Nambia in 1989, then to Sierra Leone during the Liberian civil war. She was the UNHCR’s chief of mission in Sarajevo during the Bosnian war.
