Netanyahu: EU rejects Israel boycott

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that the European Union refuses to boycott Israel in any form.

Netanyahu reportedly said at the start of the cabinet’s weekly meeting that Israel had agreed with the European Union to get relations “back on track”.

A statement quoted Netanyahu as saying: “In the phone call I made over the weekend with the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, she told me that the European Union refuses to boycott of Israel in any way.”

“Mogherini explained that the decision to label settlements products is a non- binding step and does not reflect the European position towards Israel’s final borders,” Netanyahu claimed.

“Of course this does not mean that there will be no friction, because there are things I disagree with, with certain countries within the European Union, but there are countries that support us. They are not a few,” he added.

A spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry Emmanuel Nahshon said on Saturday that Israel has settled its differences with the European Union after the latter issued guidelines for the labelling of products from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

While the labelling directive is not expected to change, Nahshon said Israel had received assurances that the move “is not a political step to determine future borders or to boycott Israel”.
