February 24, 2016 at 12:28 pm

The Israeli Knesset said yesterday that it will encourage hundreds of Jews living in Brazil to immigrate to Israel this year.

Of the world’s 13.746 million Jews:

  • 5.9 million live in Israel
  • 5.8 million in North America
  • 1.4 million in Europe
  • 329,000 in South America
  • 119,000 in Australia
  • 75,000 in Africa
  • 40,000 in Asia
  • 54,000 in Central America

“The state of Israel will invest, through the Jewish Agency and the Jewish Agency for Israel and World Zionist Organisation, $300,000 this year to encourage immigration from Brazil in light of the rise in the number of immigrants from this country,” the Knesset’s statement said.

These funds will be used to create preparatory workshops for Brazilians interested in immigrating, creating Hebrew language classes for new immigrants, and helping them find job opportunities in Israel, the Knesset added.

During a session in the Israeli parliament’s Committee for Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs, it was revealed that 191 Jews emigrated from Brazil to Israel in 2012.

It expected the number to reach 750 this year.

According to the Jewish Agency for Israel, there are 13.746 million Jews around the world including 5.9 million in Israel.
