Sweden increases donation to UNRWA

February 24, 2016 at 3:28 pm

Sweden has announced an increase in its annual contribution to UNRWA’s budget to $40.6 million.

UNRWA said in a statement that “this 15 per cent increase follows the past year’s growth in Sweden’s support for the Agency, highlighting its status as a consistent and valued partner in aiding Palestine refugees.”

Sweden’s support to the UNRWA emergency appeal will be announced later on this year, it added.

Stressing on Sweden’s commitment to the well-being of Palestine refugees, Sweden’s Consul General Ann-Sofie Nilsson said: “The decision to increase our core funding to UNRWA shows the great importance that Sweden attaches to the Agency and its work for Palestine refugees.”

During a visit to the Amari refugee camp in Ramallah Nilsson met with Palestine refugees and discussed women’s empowerment and the protection of those in need.

Between 1993 and 2016, Sweden contributed more than $693 million to UNRWA, including the latest contribution.
