Sisi holds emergency meeting on Sinai insurgency

March 22, 2016 at 3:18 pm

Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi today convened an emergency security meeting to discuss a recent spike in militant attacks in the Sinai Peninsula.

On Saturday, at least 15 Egyptian policemen were killed in a militant attack in North Sinai. Daesh later claimed responsibility for the violence.

According to a statement issued by the presidency, today’s meeting tackled the current security situation in Sinai and plans by the army and police to find and destroy terrorist hideouts.

The meeting was attended by a host of high-ranking army and police officials, including the ministers of defence and interior.

According to the statement, Al-Sisi called for “complete coordination” between the army and police in the fight against “terrorism”.

“Such operations [like recent attacks in Sinai] only serve to make Egyptians more determined to fight terrorism and extremism,” Al-Sisi said.
