Turkish Naval Forces said yesterday that they have captured 1,048 illegal immigrants while they were trying to reach the Greek islands since the start of their cooperation with the Turkish Coast Guards on 11 March.

Officials in the Turkish Navy told the Anadolu Agency that the situation of refugees fleeing Syria as a result of the ongoing war is one of the greatest tragedies witnessed by humanity since World War II.

The officials noted that the Coast Guard requested the Naval Forces’ assistance to control illegal immigration which is taking place off the coast of Izmir.

The navy has been patrolling the Aegean Sea using ships and helicopters.
