Islamic union condemns attacks on Brotherhood members in Egyptian jail

The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) denounced the attack on a member of its Board of Trustees Salah Sultan and on the Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide, Mohamed Badie, in an Egyptian jail.

IUMS said in a statement that it was deeply concerned by reports that a police officer had attacked Sultan at the notorious Akrab prison. Sultan is an IUMS member and a scholar of Islamic law. His teeth were broken in the attack, media reports showed.

The union added that it is also following up on news that Badie has also been mistreated, adding that no respect was shown to the men’s educational and social standing.

Badie’s family recently released a statement detailing alleged violations committed against him in prison.

IUMS called for “opening a fair and impartial investigation into the attack on Dr Salah Sultan and other scholars, women, children and youth who are filling prisons” in post-Morsi Egypt.

The statement, which was signed by the head of IUMS Yusuf Qaradawi, stressed that “those unjustly detained in Egypt” have the right to protest against the situation through all possible means, such as hunger strikes.
