Libyan General Khalifa Haftar says he will support any unity government endorsed by parliament

April 7, 2016 at 9:52 am

Libyan General Khalifa Haftar has said he would support any unity government that receives the parliament’s confidence.

The general made his remarks during an interview with Egyptian Al-Ahram newspaper, adding that the Libyan army does not interfere in politics.

Haftar said he refuses “the formation of a military junta in the country”.

Libyan media reported that Haftar intends to form a military council under his leadership to lead the country if the UN-backed unity government failed to obtain parliament confidence.

“We will not accept the division of Libya,” Haftar said.

The Tobruk-based parliament has failed for the eighth time to grant confidence to the national unity government led by Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj due to lack of quorum.

Haftar, leading the Libyan National Army (LNA), has been the key force fighting the Libya Dawn, an umbrella of several armed groups whose allegiance lies with General National Congress (GNC).
