Iran and Russia are discussing a project that will see the building of a canal linking the Caspian Sea with the Gulf, Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanai revealed last week.

“Yes, this issue is being discussed,” Russia’s semi-official news agency TASS quoted Sanai as saying during a gathering with students in St. Petersburg.

Following a meeting with the Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan have agreed to speed up talks on a North-South transport corridor.

Part of the corridor will go along the western coast of the Caspian Sea from Russia to Iran through Azerbaijan.

Zarif told the Russian news agency that the corridor will not only serve the citizens of the three countries, but is likely to become one of the best and cheapest ways for transportation from Asia to Europe.
