Libya closes Ras Ajdair border crossing with Tunisia

Libyan authorities yesterday closed the Ras Ajdair border crossing with Tunisia.

Mohammed Jarrafa, the head of thre Ras Ajdair crossing, told the Anadolu Agency that “the closure process came against the backdrop of the sit-in that was staged on Sunday by a group of Tunisians in the town of Ben Guerdane to demand the release of a number of traders who we captured on charges of paying bribes.”

“We call on the Tunisian authorities to provide full protection for Libyans arriving in Tunisia,” Jarrafa added.

On Sunday, a number of Tunisian nationals prevented Libyan cars from crossing into the centre of the city demanding Tunisian traders held by Libya be released.

Representatives of the Libyan and Tunisian sides have met to discuss the reopening of the crossing.

The Libyan official pointed out that the two sides are expected to agree on a set of items to reopen the crossing in the coming hours.

Ras Jedir is considered the main crossing between Tunisia and Libya, through which most passengers and goods pass between the two countries.
