Differences grow between Jordanian government and parliament

April 20, 2016 at 3:25 pm

The dispute between the Jordanian government and the parliament in Amman have grown over official appointments considered to be outside the law.

The dispute comes ahead of the government and the parliament stepping down in preparation for the parliamentary elections this summer. It reveals the damaged relationship between the executive and the legislative authorities in the kingdom.

Although Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour has approved the appointment of 109 new employees from amongst the sons and other relatives of parliamentary deputies, he made his objections to them clear in a formal letter to House Speaker Atef Tarawneh. According to Ensour, such appointments are definitely illegal.

The differences between Ensour and Tarawneh were made public when the official letters between them were leaked to social networking sites.
