News reports have circulated that Italy’s prosecution has added the name of controversial Egyptian TV host Ahmed Moussa to a preliminary list of those suspected to be involved in the murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni.

The Italian prosecution’s decision was reportedly made on the grounds that Moussa interviewed a purported eyewitness who alleged he saw Regeni having a quarrel with another foreigner near the Italian consulate on the day before he went missing.

News reports say that Moussa tried to promote this narrative to impact public opinion. Egyptian investigators later proved that the allegations made by the purported eyewitness on Moussa’s show were false.

The Italian prosecution reportedly added Moussa to a preliminary list of suspects, accusing him of misleading investigations and attempting to prevent the discovery of the real murderers.
