Houthis have reservations as peace talks begin in Kuwait

April 22, 2016 at 12:08 pm

The Houthis announced early this morning their reservations on the points made yesterday by UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh on which the Yemeni talks in Kuwait will be based.

Houthi television channel Al-Maseera reported that the delegation affiliated with the group and the former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh’s party, who are taking part in the talks are committed to their position of a ceasefire before any discussions.

According to the channel, the Houthi and Saleh’s delegation told Ould Cheikh that they will not hand over their weapons and fate to their “enemies”, in reference to the government, and that they are prepared for true peace and consensus amongst Yemenis.

Ould Cheikh had said that the “Yemeni peace talks that began yesterday evening in Kuwait after a three-day delay, will base its work on the five points and the UN resolution 2216.”

The five points include agreeing on transitional security measures, the withdrawal of armed groups, handing over heavy and medium weapons to the new government, resuming inclusive political discussions, and establishing a committee for prisoners and detainees.
