Qatari Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammad Bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani on Sunday held separate phone calls with the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, US Secretary of State John Kerry, and German Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier to discuss the worsening situation in Aleppo, northern Syria.

Qatar News Agency reported that the ministers discussed “the tragic humanitarian situation in Aleppo and the Syrian regime’s brutal shelling and massacres of civilians and destruction of civilian institutions”.

Sheikh Mohammad Bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani stressed during the talks on the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities to protect the Syrian people and ensure access for humanitarian aid.

Earlier on Sunday the Qatari foreign minister met with Syrian opposition leader, Riad Hijab, in Doha and discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Aleppo.

Qatar has called, on Saturday, on the Arab League to hold an emergency meeting at the level of permanent delegates to discuss the latest developments in Aleppo.

Syrian regime and allied Russian warplanes have been shelling residential neighbourhoods in Aleppo including hospitals and public facilities since last week which led to the killing of hundreds of civilians.
