Egypt reopens Rafah crossing for 2 days

May 12, 2016 at 10:26 am

Egyptian authorities yesterday reopened Wednesday the Rafah crossing for two days after it was closed for 85 consecutive days, Al-Ray News Agency reported.

The Palestinian Ministry of the Interior said that at least 30,000 stranded Palestinians are registered and have an urgent need to travel either for treatment, study, work or to be reunited with their family members. It added that the actual number of those who need to travel is “far greater than this”.

Only 433 passengers and ten ambulances carrying ten patients were allowed to cross the border yesterday.

Since the early morning, thousands of people arrived at the crossing in the hope that they will have the opportunity to leave the Strip.

Egypt closed the Rafah crossing in 2007 as part of the Israeli siege on the enclave.
