Italy has appointed Giampaolo Cantini as its new ambassador to Egypt.
On Tuesday, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said his government had decided to transfer former Italian Ambassador to Cairo, Maurizio Massari, to Brussels to head the Italian diplomatic mission to the European Union and replace him with Cantini, the official Italian news agency ANSA reported.
Italy summoned Massari from Cairo last month following the murder of Italian PhD student Giulio Regeni in Cairo.
President of the Italian Senate’s Human Rights Commission, Luigi Manconi, criticised the decision saying the government should have taken more effective measures against Cairo.
