UN considers airdrops to besieged areas in Syria

May 20, 2016 at 11:59 am

The UN Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said that if no developments were achieved concerning the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged areas in Syria by 1 June, the international organisation intends to deliver them by air.

De Mistura made his remarks during a joint press conference after meeting with Jan Egeland, his humanitarian aid advisor.

Remarking on the Syrian regime’s denial of the entry of humanitarian aid to the besieged city of Darya, De Mistura said: “Soldiers with full bellies have prevented the entry of food to babies”.

Asked about the date of the resumption of talks between the Syrian opposition and the regime in Geneva, he said the date will not be disclosed before the end of the hostilities and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged areas.
