Following an invitation from the government in Amman, the European Union has announced that it has agreed to send a mission to observe the Jordanian parliamentary elections scheduled to take place in September, Anadolu reported on Friday. The EU’s Election Observation Mission (EOM) team is expected to arrive in Amman next week.

In a press release, EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said that she had appointed European Parliament member Jo Leinen as chief observer of the EOM. She evaluated Jordan’s intention to “achieve a political and electoral reformation despite many challenges it faces” and noted that this is a “positive model” in the region.

The Jordanian decision to have the EU monitors in the country leads Europe to support the reformation efforts. Having “credible” and “transparent” elections reinforces both governance and democracy in the country.

According to the press release, this will be the second elections in Jordan observed by the EU; a previous mission went to Amman in 2013.

“The EOM will follow all stages of the elections closely,” said German MEP Leinen, “including the campaigning, and will work in a transparent and cooperative manner with all Jordanian stakeholders.”
