A year after the picture of Syrian toddler Alan Kurdi shock the world, the situation for refugees remains unchanged.

Thousands are still risking their lives every day seeking safety and a better life in Europe. They make the journey in spite of the knowledge that many have died en route and once they arrive in Europe an uncertain future awaits.

To deal with the number of refugees and migrants arriving in Greece, the EU signed a deal with Turkey which aims to address the overwhelming flow of smuggled migrants and asylum seekers traveling across the Aegean Sea by allowing Greece to return to Turkey “all new irregular migrants”.

But the number of those arriving remains high. This week, during a 30-hour period from Monday to Tuesday, Italian Coast Guards reportedly rescued 6,500 refugees and migrants making their way across the Mediterranean Sea from Libya.

The situation for Syrian refugees around the world and citizens who have not fled the civil war remains unstable.

Today, a year on from his son’s death, Kurdi’s father has denounced the world’s failure to stop the bloodshed in his home country.
