US-Russian Syria peace talks fail, again

September 5, 2016 at 1:57 pm

The US and Russia have once again failed to reach a deal on a ceasefire in Syria during a meeting at the G20 summit in China.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov failed, for the second time in two weeks, to resolve their differences over the Syria conflict.

Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hangzhou, China, yesterday morning, Obama said both countries still had “grave differences” over the future course of action to put an end to the five years of violence in Syria. “I think it’s premature for us to say there’s a clear path forward, but there’s the possibility at least for us to make some progress,” the US president said.

The two countries will have another opportunity to strike a deal during the UN General Assembly meeting in New York which beings on 18 September.
