A suicide car bomb attack in Baghdad’s Karrada district killed at least 9 people late Monday evening, news wires report. The attack was directed at an assembly of Shi’ite Muslims and has been claimed by Daesh.
Local first responders told media that 20 people were also injured. According to Amaq news agency – which is widely considered to be a media front for Daesh – broadcast a statement that detailed the terrorist group’s claim of the responsibility for the attack and also its intended targets.
This latest attack took place close to the site of July’s massive bomb blasts that killed 324 people, which was one of the worst bombings of its sort since the US and UK-led invasion of the country in 2003.
Recent reports from the Associated Press (AP) have brought new light to the horrific crimes carried out by Daesh in Iraq and Syria. The AP uncovered 72 mass graves that have entombed the victims of Daesh’s violence. One of these graves contained around 1,7000 bodies.
However, in July Brett McGurk, a spokesperson for the US State Department said, in prepared testimony to the US Senate, that the militant group has lost ‘47 percent of the territory it previously controlled in Iraq’ and there has also been a significant decrease in the number of fighters for the group over the past two years.
