Essebsi pushes for $22bn in international aid for Tunisian economy

September 21, 2016 at 3:20 pm

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi has renewed calls for international support for a plan that would see Tunisia receive $22 billion over a period of five years to stabilise its socio-economic standing.

Essebsi was expected to seek mobilisation of the plan on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York which closed yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference, the President of the Tunisian Parliament, Nasser Mohamed, supported the calls saying that Tunisia is awaiting help from Europe to “rescue” its economy. He added that the plan would confront the economic and social challenges in the country and create comprehensive free trade between Tunisia and the European Union.
