Tunisia sentences 6 over soldiers’ deaths

A Tunisian court sentenced one man to death and five others to prison for the killing of eight soldiers in July 2013, Tunisian newspaper Alchorouk reported yesterday.

The defendants were handed jail terms of between seven and 16 years for their part in the murders.

The newspaper said Mohammed El-Omari received a 16-year prison sentence and the death penalty, Fareed El-Barhoumi was sentenced to 13 years in prison and five years of probation, while each of Ahmed El-Mubaraki, Hamza Saleh, Thamer Saleh and Saber Bu Allaqa were sentenced to seven years in prison and five years on probation.

On 29 July 2013, an armed group attacked the Tunisian army in the area of Tellah, Jebel Al-Shaanbe. The attack left eight soldiers dead.
