A Saudi man whose decomposing body was found in his flat in Cairo, Egypt, was strangled with a piece of cloth until he died, according to reports.

The body of 47-year-old Khalil Al-Omayrini was found in his flat in Giza on Thursday after police were alerted to a smell coming from his flat. Due to how decomposed his body was police believe he had been dead for several weeks.

In an interview with Al Arabiya news channel, one of the victim’s relatives, Saleh Al-Omayrini, said the murder was mysterious but it was obviously a criminal manner as his body had been hidden away so that not even the cleaner found it. He added that the door to the flat had also been left open.

Saleh added that Khalil frequented Egypt regularly for business and had gone there a couple of weeks ago. “We do not know yet when his corps will reach Saudi Arabia, as the Egyptian authorities are still conducting investigations to uncover the circumstances of murder,” he added.

Sources revealed that the victim was reported as missing when a man who was supposed to meet him to watch the World Cup qualification game between Saudi and UAE couldn’t reach him over the phone, Al Arabiya reported.

Director of Public Prosecution Hossam Nassar said Khalil’s possessions were scattered across his apartment when the police entered it, indicating that the killers were searching for something. However none of his belongings were thought to be missing.

The Twitter hashtag Saudi_man_killed_in_Cairo has been trending since Khalil’s body was discovered.
