Kuwait ‘prepared for any threat from Daesh’

Kuwait’s deputy foreign minister has asserted that the country is prepared to intercept any Daesh advances onto its land along its borders with Iraq should they occur. His comments come after Iraq launched a campaign to rid the country to Daesh’s last major stronghold in the country, Mosul. Many now worry that the militants may flee to neighbouring countries including Kuwait.

“We are fully prepared and ready to deal with any negative developments in the region, including the consequences of what is happening in Mosul which we hope to see liberated from Daesh,” Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah said.

Al-Jarallah also reiterated that Kuwait’s military capabilities are advanced enough to address any counter-terrorist operations and that Kuwait has not stopped purchasing weapons since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990.

“Acquiring weapons is a normal thing, especially in light of the developments in the region that require it. We look at the matter as a normal part of Kuwait’s relations with its strategic allies,” he said.
