Report: Sudan lodges complaint against Egypt at UNSC

October 26, 2016 at 1:09 pm

Sudan has lodged a new complaint to the UN Security Council against Egypt over the disputed Halayeb and Shalateen Triangle, the Sudan Tribune reported the Sudanese foreign ministry saying on Monday.

According to the paper, a senior Sudanese diplomat said that his government supported the complaint after the latest Egyptian moves aiming to claim the area.

The triangle, which is a 20,580 square kilometre area along the Red Sea, has caused tension between Egypt and Sudan since 1958, shortly after Sudan’s independence in January 1956. Prior to independence, Sudan was under British occupation, whose administration was based in Cairo.

The paper said the triangle had been under the full control of Cairo since 1990, following an apparent attempt to assassinate ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The Sudanese foreign minister stressed that his ministry had proposed the issue of the triangle in every meeting with Egyptian officials, the paper explained, stressing that the issue was discussed by both countries’ joint technical committees.

Cairo, the newspaper noted, rejected a Sudanese request to hold direct discussions on the issue last month or to accept international arbitration through the International Arbitration Court and has imposed new restrictions on  the entry of Sudanese nationals to the area.
