Egyptian police forces stormed the Borg El-Arab prison in Egypt’s Alexandria governorate, detainees’ families said.
Prisoners had been voicing their anger at the mistreatment they suffered at the hands of security forces, and the unhygienic and overcrowded conditions they are being held in. Families have also been providing prisoners with medicines or personal items.
During the raid, police officer Amr Omar assaulted and beat a death row detainee. The prisoner was left with severe wounds to his head and was transferred to hospital for treatment.
Detainees were prevented from meeting with their families, which incited prisoners to rise up against the police forces’ violations.
Police officers threw tear gas into wards holding death row inmates. Officers later stormed Cell 21 and tortured its detainees.
According to international organisations, Egyptian authorities have been violating human rights since the overthrow of former President Mohamed Morsi, including reports of deaths in detention as a result of torture and lack of access to medical care.
