Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ramtane Lamamra has called on other African nations to support the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, stirring controversy and anger from Morocco who claims sovereignty over the Western Sahara.
The minister made his remarks during a seminar organised yesterday by his ministry in Algiers entitled “The role of Algeria in the Decolonization of the African continent.”
Lamamra said that Africa’s independence will remain “incomplete” until the Western Sahara decides its own fate.
“The decolonization of the African continent and ensuring the people’s right to self-determination in all its meanings can only be achieved through the African nations’ solidarity with each other and with the Sahrawi cause,” Lamamra said.
The minister added that his country has supported a number of African countries politically, diplomatically and financially to win their freedom.
The seminar coincides with Moroccan King Mohammed VI’s visit to several African countries to defend his country’s position in its conflicts with the Sahrawis, and is likely to be viewed as specifically antagonising Algiers western neighbour.
