Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman yesterday hinted that Israel may have carried out the attack on the Mezzeh military airbase near Damascus, Syria.

He claimed the attack was to prevent the smuggling of weapons of mass destruction from Syria to Hezbollah.

“We are first and foremost making efforts to maintain the security of our citizens and protect our sovereignty, and trying to protect the smuggling of sophisticated weapons, military equipment and weapons of mass destruction from Syria to Hezbollah,” Lieberman said at a meeting of EU diplomats in Israel.

He also said that Israel does not intend to intervene in the war in Syria, adding, that it believes that any future settlement in Syria must not include President Bashar Al-Assad and the Iranians.

Syria’s state news agency SANA said: “At 3am, the Israeli enemy fired several surface-to-surface missiles from inside occupied territory.” It said the missiles were fired from a position “west of Tal Abu Nada”.

The report said the Israeli missiles caused a large fire but no injuries or deaths.
